How Much Does It Cost to Build an App in Australia in 2026 (and What AI Changes)

Realistic app development costs in Australia in 2026, from MVPs to full products, what drives the price, and how AI tools are changing the maths.

I've designed and built apps that were featured by Apple and an indie marketplace that hit the top 5 in Shopping on the Australian App Store. Founders always ask the same first question: how much? Here's an honest answer.

Why quotes vary so wildly

You'll hear numbers from a few thousand dollars to well over six figures. Both can be "right." An app is a bundle of decisions, and each one moves the price:

  • Platforms: iOS, Android or both (cross-platform tools make both cheaper than they used to be)
  • Backend: user accounts, databases, admin dashboards
  • Payments: subscriptions, marketplaces, payouts
  • Integrations: maps, AI models, third-party APIs
  • Design depth: a few screens or a full design system
  • Who builds it: offshore team, freelancer, local studio or agency

Rough ranges

These are broad market ranges, not quotes:

  • Clickable prototype for testing or pitching: a few thousand dollars
  • Lean MVP from a freelancer or small team: commonly from the low tens of thousands
  • Full product with custom backend, payments and integrations: often $50,000 and up
  • Large agency builds: significantly more

I don't publish a fixed app price on my site for exactly this reason. Every app is different, so I start with a free consult, scope it properly and send a fixed quote you can pay off monthly.

What AI actually changes

AI coding tools are genuinely speeding up development, and some simple apps really can be built faster and cheaper than a couple of years ago. But the expensive parts of an app were never just typing code: deciding what to build, designing something people love, making it secure, handling edge cases and getting it through App Store review. AI makes good teams faster. It doesn't replace judgement.

How to spend less (without regretting it)

  1. Start with the one job your app must do brilliantly. Cut everything else from version one.
  2. Prototype before you build. Test the idea with a clickable design first.
  3. Go cross-platform unless you have a real reason not to.
  4. Use existing services for auth, payments and email instead of building your own.
  5. Plan for after launch. Updates, hosting and support are ongoing costs.

If you've got an app idea, the most valuable thing you can do is talk it through before anyone writes code. Book a free chat and I'll help you work out the leanest first version, or read more about my app development process.

Quick answers

How much does it cost to build an app in Australia?
It depends heavily on scope. A focused MVP from a freelancer or small team can start in the low tens of thousands, while full products with custom backends, payments and integrations commonly run well beyond that.
How much does it cost to build an app with AI?
AI coding tools can speed up development and lower costs for simpler apps, but design, architecture, testing, security and App Store work still take real expertise. Expect savings, not magic.
What is an MVP?
A minimum viable product: the smallest version of your app that solves the core problem well enough to get real users and real feedback before you invest more.
